Adenoids are lymphoid tissue located in the back of the nose. They are present at birth and then begin to enlarge. They, along with the tonsils, continue to grow until individuals are aged 5-7 years. Then, they generally regress by the age of 12-14 years , but many a times, they do not ,and cause nasal congestion, snoring, and breathing through the mouth, by physically blocking the back of the nose. Since they are located very close to the tube connecting the ear and the nose (eustachian tube), they can cause recurrent ear infections and fluid in the ear leading to hearing loss.

Adenoids can be diagnosed by a simple x ray  known as X ray adenoid. Though,topical nasal steroids may shrink adenoids slightly (ie, up to 10%),but, once the topical nasal steroid is discontinued, the adenoids grow again  and continue to cause problems.

Adenoidectomy is the surgical procedure in which the adenoids are removed. Conventional Blind curette of adenoids is no longer performed, as it leads to bleeding and incomplete removal leading to recurrence. At

You can consider Smoking now as an evil deep rooted in the society. The web of smokers is increasing its presence everyday with more new smokers added to the list. It is an addiction and becomes very difficult to leave the habit later. Once it was considered a masculine habit but off late there are several female smokers increasing in numbers every year. A lot of research has been done all these years and now we know the harmful effects of smoking. It is alarming to know that several thousands of people are killed every year from diseases related to smoking and this number keeps on increasing every year.

Cigarette is filled with several chemicals that are harmful to health. These chemicals when exposed for a longer duration cause several bad effects on one’s health. There are as many as 4000 chemicals present in a cigarette. Included in the list are carbon monoxide, nitrogen oxides, metals, cyanide, ammonia and other radio active compounds.


Smoking temporarily increases the heart rate. It causes stress on the arteries and heart. In smokers, the blood flow in the body slows down thus affecting the levels of oxygen
